India ranks second amongst the most densely populated countries in the world after China. Being one of the most populated countries, a majority of the population resides in the rural area while there is a sizeable population in the urban areas of the country. With the ever increasing population in the country, the government is facing dominant problem of providing adequate jobs in India to the millions of people in the country. It would be pertinent to mention that a major portion of the population in the rural areas are migrating to the metropolitan cities and suburban towns in an effort to take up employment that would enable them to provide two square meals for their families.
The Transition in Four Decades
During the early 1970’s, a graduation degree from a recognized University was considered to be a qualification that deemed a person to be reasonably well qualified for any type of a job. On the other hand, a person who had done his master’s degree or had completed his Masters in Business Administration from IIM, Ahmedabad or an Engineering degree from any of the Indian Institutes of Technology was considered to be highly qualified and usually landed with plum jobs in India especially in the IT industry.
A Diversion
In the present scenario, there are ample job opportunities available in the current job market especially in the IT sector. During the 1980’s, there was a great deal of emphasis laid on the manufacture of computer hardware and software with several companies setting up manufacturing plants and selling computer systems. However, mass scale computerization in the commercial and manufacturing sector led to integrated hardware and software solutions which included networking. It was during the last ten years that there was a diversion into project management, infrastructure management and systems administration. This resulted in a substantial resurgence in IT jobs in India for the countless young men and women passing out of colleges and universities. There is a gamut of government jobs in India which include both central and state governments, various government departments and ministries. Apart from the government departments, government jobs in India are also in plenty especially for people who want to join the armed forces where there is a dearth of skilled talent.
